Departmental Clubs
Most engineering departments at McMaster have their own club funded in part by the McMaster Engineering Society. These clubs are responsible for organizing events (social and academic) for the students they represent.
- BEAMS
- Chemical Engineering Club
- Civil Engineering Club
- Management Club
- McMaster Society of Mechanical Engineering
- McMaster Mechatronics Society
- Software Engineering Club
Groups
Women In Engineering
The main purpose of Women in Engineering Society is to build a strong social network for female engineers and to create a mentoring opportunities between first year and upper year engineering students, while promoting a positive social environment and encouraging female interaction within this male-dominated program. However, these events are not restricted to Female Engineers only. Some of the events that we hold are:
- Beginning of the year BBQ
- Speaker's Night
- Industry Tours
- Program Information Nights
- Social Nights (Bowling, Spa Nights, Mocktails and Movie Nights are some of the most popular ones).
To get more information on the society or to participate in the events, email at womenineng@gmail.com
McMaster Engineers Without Borders
Have you ever felt that you need something a little more than traditional engineering to fulfill you? Have you ever thought about using engineering to help people in need? Perhaps you just want to know a little bit more about international development and issues surrounding it. Any or all of these desires can be fulfilled right here on campus with Engineers Without Borders. Check out their website for more details and contacts.
Teams
McMaster Engineering Custom Vehicle Team
MecVT is the group responsible for creating and maintaining unique Engineering vehicles to promote McMaster Engineering. Current vehicles such as the CarPool, and Motorized Shopping Cart, can be seen at many Engineering events. The Carbeque is our latest project and is currently in the building stage.
There is no skill needed to join the group, it’s all about learning! If you want to build something cool, or just learn how to change brakes on a car, join the group. We are always welcoming new members to bring new ideas, new skills, and just a helping hand whenever they can.
Please e-mail Jason at the.mecvt@gmail.com for more details and to get on the MecVT mailing list!
McMaster Mini Baja
The McMaster Mini Baja team's objective is to design a vehicle that is capable of traversing a range of terrain and obstacles. This problem has been developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers to challenge students with a real life situation. On top of achieving points for how well the team did while competing in the race and testing events, there are points awarded to each team for the quality of research and design that went into the car as well as the ability to build the car on a modest budget. The Mini Baja team is well suited for those engineering students that want to put their new knowledge into practice.
For more information please contact the team at mcmasterbaja@gmail.com or visit our website at www.mcmasterminibaja.com
McMaster Engineering Concrete Tobbogan Team
Racing down a hill at over 60 Km/hr; snow blowing by you and the sounds of hundreds of engineers from across Canada cheering you on. This is what Concrete Toboggan is all about.
GNCTR (Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race) is the largest and longest running engineering competition in Canada. Every year there are many awards given for technical aspects as well as team camaraderie and McMaster consistently comes away with a prize.
The McMaster Engineering Concrete Toboggan Team designs and builds our very own entry made of concrete and aluminium. Our team consists of over 50 people and we will accept anyone who is interested, engineering or not.
Solar Car
30 cm off the ground… lying almost parallel … driving down the highway at 85 km/h… feeling the raw power of a toaster?!?!? If any of that makes you feel all tingly inside, consider joining the solar car team, where we put the word ‘engineering’ to the test. Work alongside people from various years, programs, even faculties and design and build a truly one-of-a-kind solar car that can race from Houston to Calgary in the summer of 2007. Along the way, you’ll get high off solder fumes at 5AM, play with carbon fiber till your arms permanently itch, and find out the true value of sleep and showers… loving every minute of it. Get that ever-precious ‘experience’ that people keep talking about and meet all those dinosaurs that might have a few words of wisdom to share with you. All in all, getting involved with the solar car will make you a better engineer, and you’ll learn more useful stuff in a one hour session picking a team members brain than you will in a whole semester of Algebra.
Our team meets in subgroups every week and designs/builds various subsystems of the car, such as the carbon fibre body, the high efficiency solar cell array, or the suspension and steering systems. We are always looking for dedicated new people to join our team. For anyone interested in joining, please send me (Jonathan Lannan) an e-mail at solarcar AT mcmaster.ca, or come talk to the team when we have the car out for events during frosh week, eng clubsfest, or just test driving.
McMaster Racing Club (SAE)
McMaster's Formula SAE Race Car is an open wheel, high performance vehicle designed, built and tested entirely by undergraduate engineering students. Sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Formula SAE competition attracts more than a thousand students from as many as 100 colleges and universities throughout North America and Great Britain.
Sports
If you have an intramural team for any sport that is compromised mostly of engineering students, the M.E.S. will be glad to support you and cover your intramural fees. For more information contact the M.E.S. Sports Chair.
How to enter your intramural team:
- Obtain an official form from the intramural office, Room 109 Ivor Wynne Center.
- ONE WEEK prior to the entry deadline registration of teams will begin.
- Team registration fees will be paid to the Recreation Business Office - Room 220 in the Ivor Wynne Center.
- Upon registration you will be notified of a Captain's Meeting, which a team representative must attend.
In the past the MES has sponsored an ice hockey and soccer team. These two teams tend to be staples every year and play year round for fun in their spare time. If you are interested in these teams please ask the sports chair or someone in the MES office, and they will point you to a person to talk to.
Mac Eng Hockey Team
The McMaster Engineering Hockey Team is a team exclusively for engineers, both male and female, whether you are in Civil, Electrical, or Materials or any other program within the Faculty of Engineering. We operate team(s) in the McMaster Athletics and Recreation intramural Hockey League as well as Sunday Night Shinny (inclusive to anyone whether you're on the intramural team or not) for anyone who wants to come out for an hour (practically no committment) and just play some pick-up hockey. Sunday Night Shinny takes place every Sunday at Olympic Arena (with the exception of the Super Bowl, the winter exam period, and the first weekend of Reading Week) at a cost of only $5. This is a great way to come out, get some exercise that every engineer student should be able to get, and make some friends, too. There is no skill required whatsoever, even if it's your very first time on the ice, or with a hockey stick in your hand. Come out and have some fun!! If you have ANY other questions, feel free to contact Brandon Curtas, no
matter what your question is (even if you're wondering what an offside is).
